SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — San Francisco shortstop Edgar Renteria played all last season with a bone spur in his right elbow, about the size of a piece of pea gravel.

Such a seemingly minor problem to derail an entire season.

Renteria hit a career-low .250 with 19 doubles, five home runs and 48 RBIs in 124 games before the Giants turned to hot-hitting Juan Uribe as they fought for a playoff berth down the stretch. It was the fewest homers for Renteria since 1998 and resulted in a season that he called simply “embarrassing.”

“I can play like Edgar Renteria again,” he said after arriving in the Giants’ camp Friday.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy had no trouble naming Renteria the starting shortstop this season, so Uribe will continue is his role as a super infield sub — as he was last season until taking over for Renteria the final three weeks.

“You look at what Edgar has accomplished in his career,” Bochy said. “He certainly deserves a chance to go out and show what he can do when he is healthy. That’s why we signed Edgar, because of his experience and because he is a winner.

“Let him play. It’s easy to judge somebody on a short term basis, but when you have a guy who has had a distinguished career like Edgar, he deserves the starting job.”

The 33-year-old Renteria signed a two-year, $18.5 million deal in December 2008.

“I feel embarrassed last year because I was not doing my thing on the field. They signed me improve the team,” Renteria said. “I feel real shy and embarrassed for the fans and the organization. I’ll be ready all year.”

Renteria said he felt the injury in the final week of spring training, and an MRI indicated that surgery was necessary. He opted cheap flights from Ballina to Melbourne (Tullamarine) to play instead.

As any follower of the NBA will tell you, now’s the time hoops gets serious.
It is the middle of February, the groundhog has done his shadow dance, and NBA teams are about to begin the final leg of the regular season after the all-star break. The last 30 games or so separate the men from the boys, and the Toronto Raptors, who will host the Memphis Grizzlies tonight at the Air Canada Centre, are in the mix.
“Things tighten up now after the all-star break, teams start to really focus in,” Raptors head coach Jay Triano said after practice yesterday. “There’s no surprises on what teams are going to do. It’s a matter of execution, it’s a matter of getting stops.”
Triano’s primary hope is that the Raptors continue the roll they’ve been on for more than two months, winning 22 of their last 32 games to make up for a tepid 7-13 start.
“I’d like to just see us continue playing the way we were before the break,” said Triano, whose Raptors have not played since last Wednesday. “We had a nice little run going and, hopefully, we get back, we’re a little bit rested and take care of our bodies and finish off the final 30.”
With the trade deadline tomorrow, the feeding frenzy has already started for teams looking to strengthen their lineup for the stretch run.
The Raptors (29-23) have won eight of their past nine games to move into fifth spot in the Eastern Conference standings.
Chris Bosh represented Toronto at last Sunday’s all-star game in Dallas and said yesterday he doesn’t think general manager Bryan Colangelo needs to make any alterations to the lineup by the trade deadline.
“If Bryan feels that he has to make a move to make us better, then that’s his job,” Bosh said. “I think we’re pretty good. We have a pretty good team and I think we’re confident cheap domestic flights from Launceston to Canberra in each other and we can get …continue reading

Jefferson has many gifts, but he’s no movie critic

February 3, 2010 in Uncategorized by alexakean

Timberwolves center Al Jefferson probably should stick to his day job.
In December, Wolves coach Kurt Rambis summoned his players to a film-session meeting in Salt Lake City, implying that they should be prepared for a long afternoon watching their sins from a lifeless loss at Sacramento the night before.
Instead, popcorn, pizza and the critically acclaimed independent film "The Hurt Locker" awaited them.
Jefferson, after screening the film about a U.S. Army bomb-squad unit in Iraq, was not impressed.
"It was terrible," Jefferson said then. "It was a war movie, but there wasn’t enough killing in it. The pizza and the food were good, but the movie. … It got our minds off basketball, but I would never watch it again."
On Tuesday, the movie received nine Oscar nominations, tying it with James Cameron’s big-budget "Avatar" for most nominations. Included were nominations for best picture, director, screenplay and best actor.
"Al’s good at a few things: Rebounding. Scoring on the block," Wolves forward Ryan Gomes said, ticking those things off on his fingers as he went. "But as a movie critic, I think he needs to leave that alone."
Wolves coach Kurt Rambis chose the movie for his players because it illustrates teamwork, and he thought it might remind them that, despite a 3-21 record at the time, they don’t have things so bad.
The next night, the Wolves went out and beat Utah at EnergySolutions Arena, one of the league’s most forbidding arenas, for their fourth victory.
"He’s Al Jefferson," Rambis said. "He’s not Siskel or Ebert."
Headed south
The Wolves flew to Dallas on Wednesday morning, two days in advance of Friday’s game with the Mavericks. The purpose: Give the players a break from Minnesota’s snow and cold, even though it was raining and in the low 40s when the team arrived in Texas.

Rambis also gave them the SEO Services India day off from practice, after saying Monday …continue reading

DI RESTA REVVING UP FOR F1 DREAM

Paul di Resta today revealed his dream of becoming Formula One world champion and emulating former karting rivals Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton.

Di Resta, from Bathgate, west Lothian, was "ecstatic" after being named a reserve driver for the Force India team.

The 23-year-old, who was picked following a three-day young driver test in Jerez in December, is to attend all 19 grands prix this season, and has been promised track time as he will be allowed to run in Friday practice sessions.

He said: "I would love to emulate what Jenson and Lewis have achieved but, individually, I have my own goal and that is to become world champion, and I’ve had it for a number of years.

"I’m going to try and work as hard to achieve this as possible.

"I am ecstatic to finally get the chance to move into F1 at last. I’m pleased I can start my F1 career with Force India, a team that has a lot of potential.

"I’m very pleased and very excited. It is the highlight of my career so far.

"I see this move as taking me one step closer to achieving my dream of racing in F1 but I know I have a lot to learn in terms of the car and the tracks right now."

"I have some benchmarks in my head but I think the main thing is to gain experience."

Di Resta, whose cousin is Scots IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti, has grown up with and raced former F1 world champion Hamilton.

He was also crowned the British karting champion in 2001, won the McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year award in 2004, as well as claiming second position in the DTM touring car championships in 2008.

Di Resta tested for McLaren before a three-day test with Force India last year.

Speaking about Button and Hamilton, he said: "We’ve grown up, we did go-karts together. Jenson was a bit older cheap flights from Gold Coast to Rockhampton than me – a stage further on.

DAVIES: RAMS BOSSED PRIDE PARK CLASH

January 29, 2010 in Uncategorized by alexakean

Source: Sportinglife.com (Original Article)

Billy Davies believes his young Nottingham Forest side received a valuable lesson after defeat at Derby dealt a blow to their Championship automatic promotion hopes.

Rob Hulse headed the only goal of the game after 78 minutes as Forest missed the chance to temporarily rejoin league leaders Newcastle at the summit.

It was a losing return to Pride Park for Davies on his first visit to Pride Park since his departure as Rams boss in November 2007. The Scot missed the FA Cup tie between the two sides last season as his son was ill in hospital.

Davies accepted his former club coped better with the derby atmosphere but refused to criticise his players following the end of the club’s 19-game unbeaten league run.

“It was a scrappy affair. They did a good job of stopping us play and we never got started,” said Davies.

“We looked a bit more like ourselves at the start of the second half but we didn’t get going and that was disappointing.

“Derby coped better with the type of game it was and that is a lesson to these young players. We had too many at five and six out of 10 today.

“But am I going to criticise these players? Not a chance. I am very proud of what they have done so far this season – they have been top class.

“They are allowed off-days, they are a good group who are learning and improving all the time and this is another learning curve for them.”

On his return to Pride Park, Davies added: “I had a great time here and I am very proud of what we achieved here in the 11 months I was in charge.

“I still have a lot of friends at the football club and if this three points helps them avoid relegation then I am delighted for them.”

Derby coach Johnny Metgod hopes the Rams have set the standard for the remainder of the season with the 1-0 win.

He said: “We have got to try to get some sort of consistency going and we have to make sure this is repeated cheap domstic flights from Cairns to Hervey Bay for the rest of the season.

“This is …continue reading
